Capricorno (Eb Horn Solo)

Grade 5 | 7 Mins

Capricorno was commissioned by Owen Farr, virtuoso tenor horn soloist and a member of the famous Cory Band from Wales, and first performed at the Gala Concert following the Swiss National Brass Band Championships in November 2008, accompanied by the Cory Band.

Capricorno was written with the intention of giving the soloist the opportunity to display every aspect of the tenor horn’s musical and technical capabilities. With a title derived from caprice and corno,(the composer also happens to be born under the star sign of Capricorn!) the piece starts with an expansive cadenza-like passage for the soloist, which leads to a passionate and expressive ballad. This is followed by a 6/8 caccia, with typical ‘hunting’ style melodies, which develops into a 2/4 moto perpetuo, which brings the work to a close.
