Concert Band

Highland Dawn

Grade 5 | 8 Mins

Highland Dawn was commissioned by Savannah River Winds (Richard D. Brasco, conductor), a community band based in Georgia, USA. It was premiered in Evans, GA, on 7th February, 2019, conducted by the composer, as part of a concert during the 2019 GMEA District X Honor Band Clinic.

The commission is dedicated to the memory of Henry Reid McKenney. A chemical engineer by trade, music was always an important part of his life and he served in many voluntary roles in local arts and history. Together with his wife Helen he was an avid supporter of Savannah River Winds for many years.

Savannah River Winds was founded in 2001 and has a proud tradition of commissioning new works for band. In commissioning Highland Dawn a Scottish theme was suggested as conductor Richard Brasco fell in love with the Highlands following a visit to the area.

The piece portrays a sunrise in this beautiful part of the world, where stunning mountain scenery and clear air create a special atmosphere. A quicker central section describes the area coming to life as the day begins, using the Scotch ‘snaps’ which are characteristic of traditional bagpipe music; but the serenity of the opening returns to bring the work to a peaceful close.
