Prelude to a Celebration

Grade 4 | 5 Mins

Prelude to a Celebration was commissioned by the Izumiotsu City Band from Osaka, Japan, to celebrate its 40th Anniversary. The first performance was given by the band, conducted by Kazuyoshi Uemura, on 19th November 2006.

The work opens with a majestic Lento which is based around an opening fanfare first presented by the trumpets. This is followed by a driving Vivace which presents the main theme over a rhythmic ostinato. A change of key introduces broad trio tune, which is followed by a return to the main theme. This heralds a recapitulation, which leads back to a recall of the opening fanfare to bring the work to a close.
